Dated information, reflective of a time when missions were thought to have benefited the plight of the ignorant, heathen, barbaric native American. Overlooks the brutalities done and looks at events from the aspect of the civilizing Catholic (or Catholic affiliated) personnel. Was planning to be used for son's California mission project but was set aside for other materials.
A great read taking in the context of someone that toured the missions in the early 20th century. Well researched. Don't skip the last chapter that states the train fares to get to all the missions.
Very interesting. Had shared book with hubby he agreed it was very good. We have traveled the state of California a few years ago visiting several of the missions.
Good basic research information for 4th grade California Mission Project.
This book written in 1913 and read by me in 2013 provides insights into California's past from well before Dana's time before the mast. It brings the padres back to life illuminating European settlement and native American life in California during interesting times about which little was written.
Just before preservation efforts were seriously undertaken, particularly at Capistrano.It gives valuable information that would otherwise be lost.The only mistake that was often repeated was a wrong date for the 1812 earthquake.
