It is my hypothesis that social conventions are created to test our fortitude.
Rockland circa 1900-
As the mayor's daughter, Madeline Brown enjoys a rich social life that many might envy. But a sharp mind and a growing talent for observation leaves Madeline torn between avoiding social censure and exploring the world around her.
With an aunt who considers higher education and employment equally unsuitable for the mayor's daughter, there is little to amuse her save endless committee meetings, evening socials, and her favorite pastime curling up with an exciting detective novel. The temperance and suffrage movements hold little interest for a young woman who has just endured the rigors of her father's mayoral campaign.
So when a young man shows interest in her friend, Madeline's interest piques--until his actions hint that he might not be the upstanding gentleman everyone presumes him to be. Unable to ignore her concerns, Madeline finds herself in the middle of an investigation into his character and discovers a side of Rockland she's never encountered.
Will her new hobby reduce the tedium of her life, or will her "meddling" create tension for herself and her father? Will she be forced to squelch this budding skill of hers or has Madeline finally found her calling in life.
Meddlin' Madeline Welcome to Rockland's infancy.
Sweet on You Meddlin' Madeline Mysteries Book 1 edition by Chautona Havig Religion Spirituality eBooks
Sweet on You is the first book in the Meddlin' Madeline Mysteries series by Chautona Havig. I love history and mystery stories and this combines both perfectly! It's a fun and good read for a rainy or snowy day...or any day!Madeline is the daughter of the mayor of Rockland in the early 1900's and she's trying to find where she fits in the world, as most young people do. It was a different time then. As daughter of the mayor she was expected to be in all the "important" social circles, but she did not fit into that scene. Madeline didn't want to do or be what most young ladies were expected to do or be in those days. She has a keen sense of observation and enjoys asking many questions. Most people think that is so peculiar for a young lady to ask so many questions.
A new fella shows up in town and took an interest in one of Madeline's best friends. Madeline wanted to make sure her friend was making the right choices with this young man and wanted to find out who he was, so she started some detective work in trying to find out more about this young man. Who was he, where did he come from, and why was he so interested in her friend?
While Madeline is my favorite and the main character, my second favorite character is Russell. He's a little older than Madeline and has much wisdom. My favorite quote is from him, "You can't ever assume that your secrets won't be found out. That's why it's best never to have any you're ashamed of."

Sweet on You Meddlin' Madeline Mysteries Book 1 edition by Chautona Havig Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Chautona Havig never disappoints... this was a wonderful romp back in time with a memorable heroine. She is flawed and admirable all at the same time. Can’t wait for more!
Maybe someone younger would enjoy this book. I persevered to the end though. I found this rather boring, the book was too conversational and with unrealistic characters. We were probably meant to like the main character but I didn't sorry. She was just scatty and silly. I know the author's probably put many hours of hard work into this but........Maybe just not my style.
Chauntona Havig has written a book in Sweet On You (Meddlin' Madeline) that drew me. Madeline is sassy, smart, opinionated send not afraid to get involved. She is fiercely loyal and protective of her friends. The book is complete with intrigue and relatives of Madeline's who believe she would be better off married.
I found myself sad when I finished this book because there was not a sequel, and I was definitely ready for more, I highly recommend this book.
'Sweet on You' was a delightful read, as is the case for most of Havig's stories. I adored Maddie and her friends and look forward to future adventures.
Maddie is a believable heroine, and her friends are not all flat and boring either. I liked the mystery aspect being a side item, although it's not something I read a lot. This book is only mostly neat and tidy ending, which is another oddity for Havig- rarely does she leave the reader *dying* for the next in the series. This one wasn't a cliff hanger ending, but I am anxious for more Maddie!
A fun mystery set in a period of time with lots of interest. I really enjoyed the character of Madeline. She is an engaging girl who is independent, but not to far out of the norm for her time period. The mystery and the play of good against evil entertained me, but the characters will bring me back for other books. I think everyone needs a friend like Madeline. If you don't have one, reading about her is a good second.
If you enjoy reading books set in different time periods with a little bit of mystery and a lot of fun, you will enjoy reading about Meddlin' Maddie.
Madeline lives in turn-of-the-century Rockland (where other books are set in modern times) and has noticed something unsettling about her friend Edith's suitor. With the help of her friend Amy's brother Russell who is looking after her in a brotherly way (or is he?), she utilizes her new Brownie camera and rides the trolley to "the other side" of Rockland to find out more.
Madeline is just getting started on her journey from recognizing her keen observation ability to ....... well, we don't know yet, but future books promise to be fun and exciting to find out!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book for free and chose to review it with my honest opinion.
I'm sure this is a wonderful story, but I've tried twice now to read it and just couldn't get into it. I couldn't tell you what the problem was, but I just couldn't find my footing in the story. I've read Chautona's blogs on writing reviews and not critiquing an author on stuff that isn't their fault, so I am giving this story a four simply because it's not her fault I just don't like her character, or it's just not my type of story. I love Chautona's books and have read a bunch of them - this just isn't one of the ones that I happen to like. We'll give one of her others a try!
